Unlock My Past provides a range of Video Transfer services to help customers preserve volatile VHS, VHS-C, 8mm and other Video media transferring their images to DVD and Blu-ray Discs.
Video Tape is, like all tape based media, susceptible to degrading through use as the rolling video record and play heads are in constant moving contact with the tape as well as general degradation through old age.
Unlock My Past Video Services have three service lines:
- Standard transfer services
- Enhanced transfer services
- Custom transfer services
The Standard Service comprises a direct 1 to 1 transfer of the video onto DVD (at present transfer direct to Blu-ray is not supported for the standard service). Whilst up to 180 minutes can be directly moved from a tape to a DVD, we recommend that only 120 minutes are transferred to preserve quality. We would use 2 DVDs to maintain the quality of the finished product.
Chapters are placed in the DVD at 5 minute intervals to facilitate fast forwarding through the video. Each disk is numbered and titled (where provided by the customer). DVDs are returned in white paper DVD envelopes to keep postage costs down and to allow the customer to choose the type of storage Jewel Case they prefer. We can provide Jewel Cases and inserts if required.
The Enhanced Service features the transfer of the video content to a computer where the images are prepared to be transferred onto DVD (or Blu-ray). By default titles are added as well as chapters every 5 minutes. The enhanced service captures the video and audio content and provides a higher quality transfer. We apply filters to remove camcorder shake, sharpen the image (if necessary), and enhance colour and brightness. The enhanced service requires more attendance to capture the video and to review quality. We capture the video, check the audio sync. And we look to de-interlace video should it require it.
DVDs and Blu-ray discs are returned in white paper disc envelopes to keep postage down and to allow the customer to choose the type of storage Jewel Case they prefer. We can provide Jewel Cases and inserts if required.
The Custom Service is similar to the enhanced service but we can change the aspect ratio to 16:9 to suit toady’s wide screen TVs if required. The customer can detail what chapters they would like by providing the timings required at the time of order. We add a menu to the front of the DVD and can add non-copyrighted music if required.
Important Note: The quality of the source determines the quality of the DVD. We are unable to enhance video pictures to the same degree as we can photographs, negatives and slides. It can be prohibitively expensive to do anything other than the pre production checks we carry out. Some pre production work is undertaken prior to burning the DVDs themselves this includes audio synchronisation and the filters applied as noted in the various service offerings.
We offer an editing service at £25 per hour. To have your tape edited you need to provide an edit list. Rewind your tape to the start of the actual video (not the tape) and set the time counter to 00.00.00. Note start and finish times required and add a description of the scene if possible to assist us. We can talk you through this process.
It should be noted that transfers are undertaken in real time so a 90 minute tape on a direct transfer will take 90 minutes to record onto DVD in addition to the preparation and setting up time. Post production work includes finalising the DVD to make it playable on a DVD player and a test sampling of the DVD.
When produced on a PC there are a number of processes that are carried out after the video and audio have been captured by the PC. The addition of an opening page with menu options is also provided as well as the ability to uniquely name the DVD for printing and for the DVD home screen.
